How to Support Our Activities

Sponsoring Events and Scholarships

To better serve the financial needs of our various projects and scholarships, we have established our own non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation, the Friends of the California Governor's Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities, Inc. Because we work in partnership with government and private industry, almost all money received by our non-profit is spent directly on our programs and clients. It is through the fundraising efforts of this organization that we are able to sponsor the following:

Hal Connolly Scholar-Athlete Awards… provides supplemental financial assistance to
potential freshman college students with disabilities who excel academically and have participated in varsity level athletics. We offer 3 male students and 3 female students $1000 scholarships each year.

Youth Leadership Forum… provides 60 high school juniors and seniors from across California with a one-week leadership and career development experience. Living on campus at Sacramento State University, our delegates meet role models(successful adults with disabilities), tour the Capitol, learn about their educational and vocational options, and best of all, learn about their role as part of the disability community. Annual expenses for this event are approximately $85,000.

Media Access Awards… recognizes outstanding media professionals, films, television shows, commercials, and other products in the media and entertainment industry for their accurate portrayal of people with disabilities. Recognition is also given for employing and casting people with disabilities in the industry. The cost of our annual award event varies depending on the venue and the nature of award presentations. The actual costs to Friends can vary from $25,000 - $50,000 per event.
