Awards Presentation

Awards are presented annually to Californians at the Governor's Committee's special recognition program in October. Each award is symbolized by a plaque which is appropriately inscribed.

Award Categories

The Governor's Trophy is California's highest honor given to a Californian with a disability for outstanding achievement in the world of work and significant contributions that increase public awareness of the experience of disability. The recipient of this award will be automatically inducted into the California Hall of Fame for Persons with Disabilities.

The Distinguished Service Award is given very sparingly in public recognition of an individual, agency, firm, or organization which has made extraordinary local, state and national contributions to the employment of people with disabilities.

The Employer of the Year Award is given each year in recognition of employers' outstanding achievements in improving employment opportunities for people with disabilities. One employer will be chosen from each of three categories, depending on the employer's size.

The Employee of the Year Award is provided each year to an outstanding employee from the public or private sector for exemplary leadership through the employing agency. This leadership includes encouraging, inspiring, facilitating, or promoting the employment of disabled persons.

The Excellence in Universal Design and Technology Award is presented each year to an individual or organization for creating/incorporating a unique/innovative design that is universally accessible by both disabled and non-disabled persons. Universal Design may include technology, architecture, graphics, furniture, products or services. The Excellence in Universal Design and Technology Award supports the philosophy that as many people as possible should be able to use a building or product if not in an equal way, at least in an equivalent way.

The Professional of the Year Award is given to a career professional who has made extraordinary contributions to the employment of people with disabilities. The nominee can be employed in any formally recognized profession, such as architect, dentist, engineer, attorney, physical therapist, physician, optometrist, rehabilitation counselor, educator, or elected official.

Policy for Selecting Recipients

No individual or organization may receive an award more than once in five years, with the exception of the Distinguished Service Award. Members and staff of the Governor's Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities are not eligible for any award.
